Fraction Action, Bird Feeders and Other Fun Stuff!

During Literacy Hour we spent some time learning about the different native birds that are our reading groups are named after.  Mrs Hassall shared a Big Book, we listened to different bird calls, went bird nest hunting and even made some bird feeders.  We made them with pinecones, peanut butter and some bird seed.  It made the classroom smell like peanut butter on toast.  With the help of our Enviroleaders we hung them in the trees around the school.  One frosty morning, Mrs Webb noticed that there were quite a few bell birds feeding on them.  She tried very hard to get a photo of them nibbling on the feeder, but it turns out that they are quite hard to stalk!

We have been very busy exploring fractions during our Numeracy time.  We made some tasty looking ice creams that show that two quarters is the same as a half.  There were some very delicious looking cones - one even had 'Beetroot and Dark Chocolate' flavour.  A masterchef in the making! Come in and check them out.  We finished up our unit by calculating fractions based on a packet of M&Ms.  We showed AMAZING self control as we worked out the fractions of the colours, and then evenly shared them between our group.

We were lucky enough to have Lesley Ottey visit Manuka with her 'Rubbish Hat' on.  She brought a bag of plastic rubbish and as we went through it we discovered different types of plastic, and how we recycle them.  Did you know that the Green Bins at the supermarkets that are for recycling soft plastics are for more than just single use shopping bags!  You can put any clean plastic that can be scrunched into a ball in there - including foil lined plastic like muesli bar wrappers.
