North Loburn School's Garden to Table Programme
In the beginning...
The GTT programme was first started as a trial project in Term 4 of 2014.
One of our teachers and a parent had originally run a lunchtime club. This was open to whoever was interested from Years 1-8. These children would harvest vegetables and sell them at school with the money going back to the school.
The Garden to Table programme then evolved from this club. The previous principal had seen an example and liked the idea. The programme started out pretty basic. We pretty much ran the show as we saw fit.

The current Programme
Key changes have been made over the years.
Key changes have been made over the years.
- Wonderful support and guidance from Victoria for our programme
- Weekly sessions being run for the programme in Terms 1,2 and 4
- Garden session runs one week, kitchen session the next week
- Change of classes in regards to who can access the programme ( 3 classes from Year 1-5)
- 2 extremely passionate parents leading our programme -1 garden specialist and 1 kitchen specialist. They work very closely together
- School funds the programme from our Ops grant
- Home and School have committed to funding this year
- Always very popular with our parent helpers
So why are we doing this programme?
- As a small semi rural school we place a lot of emphasis on environmental education.
- Our Enviro school status is also a key reason behind this programme.
- The key statement of GTT teaching children essential life skills in a fun, engaged and hands on way sits extremely comfortably with us.
- Our own Summit Challenge homework programme is driven by this line of thinking as well.
- GTT at North Loburn is also about learning to self manage, show pride and to work collaboratively
- As the hub of the community this programme provides us with opportunities to include our parents and to give back to them
- It is about teaching and developing life skills
- Our emphasis on sustainability (a key driver as an enviroschool) is very much driven through this programme
- It is fun!!!
Young Gardener of the Year 2017
By now many of you may be aware that we have had two of our children win the Young Gardener of the year award. This is very exciting.
The link here takes you to an article on Stuff and an interview with the children.

Young Gardener of the Year 2018 We are very proud and pretty excited to have been named the T&G Garden to Table Established School of the Year for 2018! We are very proud of our Garden to Table programme at North Loburn School, working hard to continue to develop this programme, and it is a privilege to be recognised in this way. |
We had a wonderful day on Friday 2 November! Dan Mackay and his team arrived at school to install our irrigation prize, and with some happy helpers planted our peach tree, and Tom from T&G also joined us at our assembly to present our award. As a school we dressed in 'garden mufti', and the Junior enjoyed a garden themed discovery, making little gardens, bird feeders and planting sunflowers! Such a fun day.
