At the end of term 3 we were fortunate enough to be able to participate in the North Canterbury Kapa Haka festival. Once again this was an opportunity for us to showcase our skills. We were ably led by Maaka Tua , our Kapa Haka tutor. This term our whole school has been working on a school production. This musical is based around the Curtain family who discover the power of the word Yet. Three children discover how powerful this word is by playing several board games. Each class has been responsible for creating a scene based around one of these games. Kauri's scene was based on the board game, Trivial Pursuit. We have all had lots of fun practising for this production and have learnt a variety of skills along the way. Huge thank you to everyone who have supported our show. Check out some of out photos below. Once our school speech finals were completed those of us who had gained a first or second place in our year level, became eligible to compete in the Quad Schools' final. The four schools are North Loburn, Loburn, Ashley and Sefton. This competition is an opportunity to showcase our skills to a wider community. North Loburn school did very well this year. In Kauri, two of our year six boys were placed first and third respectively. Harry spoke about Jimmy Butler and Charley spoke about being active.
Y4-8 Take the Floor Presentations Congratulations to all our wonderful Year 4 to 8 speakers in our school " Take the Floor" presentations. This year we used the same format as last year, whereby the students could use extra aids to enhance their presentation. The theme, The Power is Within Us, allowed the students to talk about their passions. The variety of topics was huge and demonstrated the diverse interest of our pupils. The results from our class were as follows: Year 5 1st= Lily Cook and Eliza Caughley Year 6 1st Charley Ward, 2nd Harry Witt, 3rd Ella Malone, 4th Eva Murphy For the first time ever our school participated in the Cultural Festival in Christchurch. Our Kapa Haka team of 47 Year 4 to 8 pupils, led by Maaka Tau, performed extremely well. Not only were we complimented on our performance on stage but off stage as well. It was a huge community effort to get us there and we would like to thank everyone involved. This was an incredible experience and we were very lucky to get this opportunity. Huge thank you to Richard Connelly for these wonderful photos. This week we have been fundraising for STAR Jam. This is an organisation that helps New Zealanders who are living with a disability. StarJam believes this is something that can be changed. Through music and performance workshops, StarJam reaches many of these young New Zealanders and provides opportunities for them to explore their talents, gain new skills and build confidence to try new things. Over the years, StarJam’s impact on Jammers (our young people) and their families has been phenomenal – inspiring self-belief and a sense of belonging, often for the very first time, resulting in a new zest for life and hope for the future. For many, StarJam has been a life-transforming experience. During our school day, some of us chose to have our faces painted and later on in the afternoon the whole school participated in 30 minutes of Jump Jam. The teachers even dressed up as Bob, while they danced to Bob the Builder music. This year our Y4-8 pupils have been given the option to be part of the Christchurch Kapa Haka festival. Many of us have taken up this option and have been practising hard. Maaka Tua, Norm and Michelle have been tutoring us and we have learnt a tremendous amount. Thanks to an very busy and willing community we have also had new Kapa Haka uniforms made for us. We performed for our school and Ashley school on Monday and now can'bank not wait for the Christchurch festival on 18 August. Tali, one of our class members, decided he would like to complete a Summit Challenge by teaching the class a new skill. As we were looking at Geometry shapes in Maths he thought it would be a good opportunity to show us how to make a very complicated shape. This was a real challenge and one or two mastered it. However he did not give up and also taught us to make a simple cube . Many of us were very successful at this. Check out our shapes below. St Johns visited our school to teach us some basic first aid. We learnt: some basic bandaging, how to care for patients with hypothermia and what to do in a variety of emergency situations. Paula Hart, the St Johns' instructor was excellent. |
