Starting school is an exciting time and we look forward to working with you to ensure your child has the best possible transition into school. The following information will help you and your child before they start school.
- Independence
One of the biggest ways you can help your child start school is to teach them to manage themselves:
❏ Can they open their lunch box?
❏ Can they take their own sweatshirt off?
❏ Can they manage themselves independently in the toilet? ❏ Can they dress themselves?(important for swimming)
❏ Can they ask a friend if they need help? - Shoes
At school we often need to take our shoes off and on. The children need to be able to do this themselves. For this reason, shoes with laces are not recommended. Most children wear velcro shoes. - Clothes
Please label everything. We do not have a lost property box at school. If the clothing is named, we can give it back to them. - Learning preparation
Any writing done at home should be done in lower case letters with capitals for names etc. Please do not teach children to write all in capitals. - Library
The children go to the library once a week. They will bring their library books home. Once you have enjoyed sharing the books with your children, please send them back to school. - Reading
Once your child has started school, they will be given a reading folder and will bring their reading book home every night which we ask you to enjoy together and for your child to return every morning.
- Litter Free
North Loburn is a very proud Enviroschool. We work hard to have a great looking school.
Part of this includes having litter free lunches. We do not have outside rubbish bins at our school. Food waste is recycled. The children at our school bring their food in reusable containers or in a lunch box with sections to avoid using plastic wrap. Please ask other parents or the teachers for ideas and suggestions if you need to. (The images below are of some options available) - Correct Pencil Grip
The image below shows the correct pencil grip that we teach our children. It is always appreciated if this is also encouraged at home.
