Welcome to Rimu, a class of 18 awesome Year 1 and 2 students, taught by Mrs Hassall! We are very lucky to be a part of this beautiful, small rural school based 15 minutes north west of Rangiora, North Canterbury. We pride ourselves on having a family focussed environment, where our values of Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Diversity and Excellence are often discussed, and widely practiced. Rimu further develops the skills introduced in Kowhai. There is a strong focus on literacy, with our phonics programme providing an excellent base for reading and writing. Maths is taught through contextualised problems that the children can easily relate to. We enjoy collaborating with Manuka (Yr2/3) during our Literacy Hour, for guided reading and literacy based activities. This allows focussed guided reading with the Guided Reading Teacher, while the Learning Coach is able to focus on supporting children with literacy activities. Kowhai (NE/Yr1) and Rimu have been working on Inquiry together this year, and we also get together for Discovery on Fridays -a hands on programme where the children can explore and learn together through play.
Rimu is very fortunate to be a part of the Garden to Table programme where they learn not only how to prepare and cook food, but how to set tables, serve food, enjoy each others company and practice table manners while we sit down to eat together. Our children have the opportunity to enjoy Sports Trust Canterbury Coaching sessions, swimming lessons at Dudley (yr 2's), Beach Education, Life Education van visits, the Down the Back Paddock Programme, Jump Jam and, every second year, our amazing school wide productions! Being a Green Gold Enviroschool means the children are constantly considering our environment and what they can do to protect our place and ensure its sustainability for future generations to enjoy. Rimu keeps families up to date with daily activities via Seesaw where the children take photos, enter learning notes or video their learning during the day and post this to their parents and grandparents. We would welcome a visit from you, or feel free to get in touch if you would like to learn more about Rimu.
